Salt Lake City, Utah Itinerary

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

I lived in Utah for about a year and had no idea what to expect - but I absolutely LOVED it. I can honestly say it is my favorite state because of everything it has to offer. You will fall in love with the mountains, the indoor & outdoor activities, and the food.

Overall, it's a very chill city that is spacious and clean. The best part of SLC is the 360 mountain views, street art, & the public electric scooters.

All experiences beginning with an *asterisks are the ones that I recommend the most.

SALT LAKE CITY:

Neighborhoods:

Downtown: I lived downtown so i absolutely love it. So much to do, very clean, and easily walkable.

The Gateway: Known for premier dining, entertainment, and shopping - a nice promenade type area within the city. Not only does it have shopping and dining, but it also has seesaws and swings for adults (super fun) - with a fire pit too. This location holds a Summer farmers market as well. The Gateway is basically downtown.

Sugar House: About 10-15 minutes from downtown, Sugar House is a cute little city that has many shops and restaurants. This is a popular place for young adults to live as it is very hip and pretty.

9th & 9th: An "artsy" type of area with cute shops, food and murals. There a few restaurants that I list below that are located here, and the High School Musical school is located up the street!

Coffee/Smoothies/Boba:

Green House Effect: A very cute coffee & crepe shop in Millcreek. Has both outdoor and indoor seating, but not much. Very cozy coffee shop vibes. I got the iced chai.

Publik Coffee: Probably my favorite coffee shop in SLC. Has many typical or unique drinks and food and lots of space to work. Be prepared for it to always be busy though (as expected).

  • Honestly John: A brown sugar, smoked hickory & almond latte

  • Lemony Snicket: A white mocha with lemon, vanilla, ginger & tumeric

  • Goat Cheese & Strawberry Jam toast

Tropical Smoothie Cafe: A yummy smoothie shop that has many locations. Comes in one giant size.

  • Bahama Mama: Strawberries, pineapple, coconut, & white chocolate.

Hello Boba: A yummy boba shop located in the Fashion Place Mall. I got a mix of the Strawberry and Coconut milk tea yogurt and it was absolutely delicious. Only downside is that it cost $8.

La Barba Coffee: The Maven District location is the only one that has breakfast tacos, so I highly recommend that one specifically. Pretty busy place and a great stop for some quick food.

  • Iced Chai

  • Iced Raspberry Green Tea

  • Breakfast tacos with side sauces

Beans & Brews: A Utah staple that is similar to Starbucks.

  • Pomberry Refresher with coconut milk

  • Chai Latte

  • Cookie Butter Frappuccino

Swig: Home of the "Dirty Soda." A super popular chain in Utah that specializes in soda creations - similar to a coffee shop, but just a different product. I felt like I needed to try this and although it wasn't amazing, the price is great so I would definitely recommend - especially for the experience. A few other companies include Sodalicious,

  • Save Me Jade: Diet Dr.Pepper, sugar free vanilla, &sugar free coconut

  • Strawberry Breeze: Water, sugar free coconut, sugar free vanilla, strawberry puree, frozen strawberry, & coconut cream

  • The Tropic: Light lemonade, mango, passion fruit & vanilla cream

  • The Perfect Pear: Sprite, pear, raspberry puree, & fresh orange

  • Buttery Beer: Root beer, butter scotch, and vanilla creme

  • *Sugar cookie: Honestly tastes like those amazing generic ones at the grocery store

  • Mini Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies (seasonal)

SpaceTea: A downtown boba spot that has many unique dessert flavored boba drinks. I opted for a strawberry honey boba but I have heard great things about the others.

A few cafes that I did not get to go to but heard great things about! -

Quick Eats:

Hot Dog on a Stick: A Utah hot spot known for its corn dogs, cheese on a stick, and fresh lemonade. I got the cheese on a stick which is essentially the same concept as a corn dog, just cheese instead of the meat. They have stand alone buildings that are too small to eat inside and they wear cute uniforms - overall a unique and cute experience.

  • American cheese on a stick

Cafe Rio: A pretty popular Mexican fast-food joint located in Utah - so of course I had to try it out. Honestly, it's nothing special. I would only go back for the queso... otherwise, stick to Chipotle.

Breakfast/Brunch:

*Honest Eatery: A health focused cafe that offers various toasts and build-your-own açaí bowl. This was another awesome place that I would definitely recommend.

  • Genuine: thick-cut organic sourdough artisan bread topped with ricotta cheese + avocado slices + red pepper flakes + crushed pepitas + extra virgin olive oil + sea salt

  • Bacon, Egg, + Cheese

  • Build-your-own Acai Bowl: Blue Majik & açaí base, with various toppings

SLC Eatery: A nice brunch spot not too far from downtown that classifies itself as a modern American restaurant with a dimsum style twist. It was a bit more "high end" than I would have liked but overall it was yummy. The mimosa bucket was my favorite part. The only downside is the fact that it is not located in a very nice area, and it is only street parking.

  • Mimosa bucket: Champagne with pineapple, orange, & grapefruit juice.

  • Okonomiyaki Benedict: Japanese napa cabbage pancake, ham, tomato, togarashi hollandaise, poached eggs, eatery potatoes

Sweet Lake Biscuits & Limeade: A known brunch place not far from downtown. Overall, it was good but I would definitely say it was pretty expensive for what you get.

  • Peach iced tea

  • Raspberry limeade

  • Garden Benedict: Fresh biscuit, poached cage-free eggs, house hollandaise, tomato, avocado, green onions, side of hash.

  • Hoss: House biscuit, buttermilk bath fried chicken breast, cage-free egg, Daily’s bacon, local cheddar, house-made Tooele Valley sausage gravy, green onion

*Gourmandise the Bakery: A cute little bakery/brunch spot that has unique YUMMY items. I couldn't recommend more - especially because you can end your meal with one of the beautiful homemade pastries.

  • *Iced Chai Latte (SO good)

  • Brioche French Toast: Crème anglaise, fresh berries & mixed berry coulis topped with fresh whipped cream

  • *Classic Croissant Breakfast Sandwich: Warm croissant with gourmet egg scramble soufflé, melted cheese & smoked local bacon (Honestly the best I've ever had)

  • Side of vegetable hash

  • *Raspberry Eclair

  • Lemon Tart

*Eva's Bakery: A DELICIOUS French themed bakery that has amazing pastries and a very pretty interior & exterior - great for a photo opt. Whether you only go for pastries, or sit down and enjoy a yummy breakfast/lunch, you will definitely enjoy.

  • Croissant Sandwich: Scrambled egg, sliced ham, tomato, gruyère, arugula, & hollandaise. Served with boulange potatoes, salad, or organic greens. (The potatoes were amazing).

  • *Stuffed French Toast: Lemon cream cheese filling & blueberry compote.

  • Margarita Flatbread: Tomato olive oil sauce, fresh mozzarella & basil on our organic pizza dough.

  • Boulange Benedict: Sauteed ham, spinach, poached eggs & hollandaise over toasted bread, served with boulange potatoes. (I love these potatoes)

  • Chai Latte

  • Cinnamon bun

  • Chocolate crossant

  • Macaroons

Roots Cafe: A local brunch spot that has a very home-y vibe. There is a vintage store connected to Roots that is fun to look at while waiting for your table, or after you enjoy your meal. More often than not, expect a wait.

  • *The Peeto Breakfast Sandwich: Farm fresh eggs, applewood smoked bacon, spicy sausage, grilled onions, caramelized jalapeños and avocado all between your choice of bread. Served with house potatoes.

  • Crepes: Two crepes stuffed with citrus-mint infused ricotta cheese then topped with a warm mixed berry sauce.

  • Chai tea latte: Tasted more like tea, so if you like that you would love it.

*Sundays Best: That popular brunch place that you go to for Instagram pictures and a boozy time. Super cute on the inside and always playing great hits. The food was yummy and I would definitely recommend - however, you will not get a table unless you make a reservation ahead of time. It's that great.

  • Spicy Chicken Sandwich: Crispy thigh, lettuce, pickles, yuzu kosho mayo served on a Martin's potato roll with fries.

  • Strawberry Ricotta Pancakes: Served with lemon curd and butter syrup. (the butter syrup was SO good)

  • *Breakfast Burrito: French fries, scrambled egg, white cheddar, nueskies bacon, avocado, salsa roja

  • *BLT Benedict: Brioche, poaced egg, smoked bacon, arugula, tomato, confit, dijon citronette, old bay

  • Chai Latte: The hot one was very flavorful!

  • Bloody Mary

Viva La Dive Drag Show: A drag show & brunch at WhyKiKi Bar downtown (which turns into a bar/club at night). The prices aren't bad and it is very entertaining, with great food!

Very popular brunch spots that I did not get to try:

  • Strawberry Margarita

  • Strawberry Daiquiri

  • Queso with half peppers

  • Chicken sandwich with everything (slaw, pretty bird sauce, & pickles)

  • French fries with pretty bird sauce & hot honey sauce

*Antica Sicilia: An upscale Italian restaurant, complete with the accents LOL. We REALLY enjoyed everything about this place and would put it at the top of the list for any visitor.

They have unique sauces such as spicy fry sauce, pineapple honey mustard, and homemade ranch. They also sell a milkshake of the month. I would definitely go back.

Red Iguana & Blue Iguana: Two very popular local Mexican restaurants. I have heard that Red Iguana is the original, and that the ex-husband took the recipes and made Blue Iguana.

Sobe Eats Mexican: This is a small drive-through Mexican restaurant that is very highly rated and a great alternative to fast food.

Bombay House: Very popular Indian restaurant. I believe they shut down their SLC location, but they still have one in Provo.

The 3 restaurants below are well-known Italian restaurants. I bet they would all be great, but I never got the chance to try them since I love Antica Sicilia so much.

The employees are dressed up in "gatsby" type attire and there was a live band when we went. Cool vibes all around.

  • Sakura: Roku, Strawberry Soju, Baileys, Peach, Fee Brothers Plum Bitters

*Mortar & Pestle: The CUTEST small bar ever. There is just a 6-seater bar and a few tables so it is very intimate. It is a very classy place with a bunch of fun colors. The drinks were good but not my favorite, but the vibe was perfect.

Sports Games:

Utah Jazz Basketball game: Utah's NBA team. We went to a game and got seats that were pretty high up since they were cheaper, but we still thought they were good seats! This was probably one of the best pro-team event I have been to as it was super entertaining even when the Jazz were not playing. They even dropped money into the crowd, so of course we had fun.

University of Utah Football Game: Utes game! Definitely recommend this college ball game if you are in town during the season. (yes, alcohol is sold here)

BYU Football Game: Cougars game! No, alcohol is not sold here but they are known for their Cougar Tail Donut which is a 15-inch maple flavored donut! The fans are so into it, its VERY loud and a great time.

  • & many more!

It doesn't matter what place you come in, just how fast your fastest lap is completed. The more races you purchase, the cheaper each race is.

LoveLand Living Aquarium: Tickets are anywhere between $18 - $28 per adult, depending on if you buy ahead. This aquarium has many exhibits and is another fun event for all ages. Also - there is a very cool "claw-like" sculpture outside that was from a 2010 U2 concert and has been up ever since (it's so big, you can even see it from the highway).

Gem Studios: A jewelry making spot that has a few locations in Utah & one in Hawaii. This is such a fun activity, you literally pick out a gem & then make a piece from scratch. It is a bit expensive, but I highly recommend because it makes for a great souvenir. (I made a ring and it ended up being $120).

Indoor Rock Climbing: Theres a few rock climbing places around SLC but I have heard the most about The Front Climbing Club. It is under $40 for rentals and lessons, with no time limit - or you can get a punch pass deal if you plan to go multiple times. Utah is very outdoorsy but if you aren't into real rock climbing, this is still a great way to get into the Utah culture.

SnowBird Spa: The resort has fun Summer activities on the mountain and also has an indoor/outdoor spa complete with a pool that is even heated in the Winter. Great views all year around! Must buy tickets online ahead of time.

Outdoor Activities:

Skiing: Mountains listed below (a few of them do not allow snowboarders)

Wheeler Historic Farm: A nice farm to walk around and look at animals while enjoying the nice day.

*UP House: THE house that the animated Disney movie "UP" was based off of. Located in a very cute residential home, they ask that you quietly take a few photos and go on your way - since a family does live in the house. Truly a must-see.

Sandlot: The Sandlot was filmed in SLC! The linked article tells you exactly where to go to find all of the cool spots like Small's house (which a family actually lives in!) and the baseball fields. A cool little self-tour to experience.

Real Sale Lake Soccer Game: Salt Lake's pro soccer team. Quite the experience and I highly recommend - especially if you've never been to a game. The energy is amazing.

Night Lights Lantern Festival: Picture hundreds of lanterns floating in the night sky above you - a BEAUTIFUL experience, captivating even. This festival has small shops, games, and food to make your night magical.

Bonneville Lake Salt Flats: A stunning area located right off the highway about 90 minutes outside of SLC and on the border of Nevada. After parking in a rest stop, you are immersed in a massive & FLAT place that seems as if it is from another planet. Below your feet is dense salt, which in some instances allows for cars to drive on top. If you look ahead, you see a beautiful mountain range in the distance. My favorite part is the fact that you can take photos that make it look like no one else is there (because of how big it is.) Utahns love to get their wedding photos here, as every photo is captivating. No tickets required.

The Midway Crater: A hidden crater located about 50 minutes outside of SLC, in a town called "Midway." A very cool experience as you float in your (required) lifejacket, and scuba divers swim in the 65 foot hole below. No need to worry about sunburn, as there is only a small hole in the ceiling that allows the sun to peak through. Also no need to worry about the temperature, as the water is pretty warm. You purchase your $15/60 minute swim tickets online.

Bear Lake: Known as “Caribbean of the Rockies” for its intense turquoise blue water, this lake is one of the most beautiful bodies of water I have ever seen! It is about a 2-2.5 hour drive from downtown SLC but it is absolutely worth it. As you drive in, you are greeted by a view of the lake from above - and it is captivating. We rented paddle boards from Bear Lake Rentals for $20 for 1 hour, but keep in mind that motorized equipment is first come first serve. Bear Lake is also a beautiful town full of delicious food and cool shops, definitely feels like a vacation spot.

  • Zipz: A really good fast-food joint that sold AMAZING Pineapple Dole Whip ice cream, burgers, corn dogs, fries, and more!

SnowBird Oktoberfest: Oktoberfest in the mountains! This event is held annually for a few weeks in September & October. Free admission and a bunch of food & uniquely flavored beers. I do not recommend ubering as many ubers will not come up to get you - just pay for parking.

Wasatch Excursions Guided UTV Tour: We took a 2-hour guided UTV (similar to ATV's) tour through the Wasatch mountains & to God's View Overlook. It was honestly SO cool and I highly recommend for anyone looking for an adventure. We went in mid-September and the Fall colors were the perfect touch. This company also does snowmobiling tours in the winter.

Snowmobiling: We snowmobiled at Daniel Summit Lodge located in the Uinta mountains, about an hour from downtown SLC. It was $300 for a 2-person snow mobile for 2 hours and we both got to drive. There was a specific trail we took so it was easy to navigate and I highly recommend as the highest point was 10k feet and it was stunning.

Yoga: I tried a few fun yoga classes around SLC and below are my recommendations.

Little Sahara Sand Dunes: Did not get to go here but I heard great things. I have been to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes in Southern Utah and it was so fun to sandboard.

*Ice Castles: The Utah Ice Castles are available to visit from about Jan-March. They make for great photographs, but all there really is to do is walk around. Tickets are about $15 each and go on sale in December. Dress warm!

Bob Sledding: SLC was the home of the 2002 Winter Olympics and the bobsledding track is still up & avaliable for use. Ticket's aren't cheap but definitely a once in a lifetime experience!

Drives:

Provo Canyon: An absolutely stunning drive that EVERYONE recommends. As you twist and turn through the canyon, you are captivated by the rocks & colors. You will be in awe over this scenic drive, especially if you go when the leaves are changing colors.

Alpine Loop: A 20-mile drive through the Wasatch Mountain Range. Do your research before you go as it is closed during the winter months due to the narrow roads covered with ice and snow.

Hikes: AllTrails

*Ensign Peak: The PERFECT hike to get a full view of the city. The entire hike is less than a mile long and you can do it in sneakers - but I wouldn't do it on super hot days as it was tiring due to the elevation. You can park on the street right at the start of the trail.

Living Room Lookout: A pretty vertical hike that ends up being about 3 miles round trip. There are no signs about where to go but there were a good amount of people there and you pretty much just follow the path upwards. They call it the Living Room Trail because the end result has rocks that are in the shape of couches and love seats, and you look out at the "TV" of the city. Someone even made a little remote control out of a rock. The view is awesome. Definitely bring water.

*Cecret Lake: A hike that is about 2 miles round trip with minimal incline at the very end. Once you complete the hike up, you are greeted by a gorgeous blue-green lake. Perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature. I highly recommend this hike as it wasn't very difficult and includes some of the greenest grass & trees I've ever seen.

*Fifth Water Hot Springs: About 1 hour south of SLC, this beautiful 2.5 mile (one way) hike leads up to 26 hot springs that feed into each other and flow down the mountain. I would say this is an easy hike and has a great reward once you reach the top. It's pretty hot water, even when we went in September. I recommend going in Fall or Winter when you can see the beautiful changing of the leaves or snow on the ground. I also recommend going early, as the small parking lot was already full at 8:30 am. Don't forget your swimsuit & a towel!

Antelope Island: A state park located about 30 minutes North of Downtown and cost $15 per car to enter. We only did 2 small hikes but it was still a beautiful trip to see the Great Salt Lake (that is slowly getting smaller). Bring bug spray.

*Silver Lake: Not a hike, more of a beautiful 1 mile stroll that is perfect for all ages. It was extremely colorful in the Fall and perfect for a Sunday morning (even the drive up is beautiful).

Donut Falls: I read on AllTrails that this hike is a little over 3 miles round trip. It is probably that long from the big parking lot, but we drove a bit further and found a smaller lot that made the hike about 1.5-2 miles round trip. I personally hiked up until the water fall sign that says no trespassing however, everyone else climbed the waterfall to get a peak at Donut Falls. It was overall very beautiful, whether you scale the waterfall or not. I recommend looking on AllTrails the day before you go, to see if anyone comments on the water level. We went when it happened to be low, but if the water is high, you will be in a full river rather than just some water - but prepare to get your shoes wet.

Gloria Falls & Red Pine Lake: Two hikes located in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Gloria Falls is not marked whatsoever but I will attempt to explain - follow the signs for Red Pine Lake, once you reach the water immediately take the narrow inclined hill on the left. Once you pass over the big wooden bridge, immediately look left and you will just climb the unmarked path following the falls - which will bring you to Gloria. If you decided to go straight after the big wooden bridge, you will eventually come to the Red Pine Lake. We went straight but just went far enough to see the view of the open canyon, which was AMAZING especially in the Fall.

Other:

Park City: A popular touristy city (especially in the Winter) located about 30 minutes West of SLC. A very rich area that has a hip main street full of restaurants and shops. Parking is limited but there is street parking that costs a few dollars for a few hours. I have even heard that you may run into some famous Winter athletes if you're lucky.

  • Atticus Tea & Coffee: A cute coffee shop located on main street & named after the a character in the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." Has a nice seating area full of many books and small items to purchase. Overall a great vibe. I got the following & highly recommend: Cosmic Chai, cookies & cream biscotti, lemon almond biscotti.

  • The Exchange on Main Consignment: A thrift/vintage store located on Main Street. Has some hidden gems. I was lucky enough to find a mint-condition $70 Spyder jacket, that retails for over $200

  • Park Silly Sunday Market: Park City's Summer Main Street farmers market held every Sunday from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm.

  • Alpine Slide & Alpine Mountain Coaster: Two fun Summer activities on the mountain! I recommend purchasing online beforehand so you don't need to wait in line but you can buy them separately (about $30 each) or together (about $50). I recommend doing both as the slide is more relaxing (3-4 min open slide down the mountain where you control the speed of your cart) and the coaster is pretty fast (also about 3 minutes). Chris & I rode the coaster together because the worker recommended it and it was definitely the best decision. I also recommend going early because the lines can get pretty long.

  • Other popular food places include: Handle, No Name Saloon Bar & Grill, Harvest Cafe, & Shabu
